“Your father asked me if we were fucking,” Joon said on their way home.

The car swerved a bit before Drew got it under control again.

“He what?” Drew sputtered.

“Well, he didn’t phrase it like that, but it was the same meaning.”

“And what did you say?”

“Eyes on the road,” Joon said, but his friend ignored him. “The truth—that we’re just best friends.”

“I never imagined that Pa knew or even suspected the truth,” Drew said as he turned his eyes back on the road.

“Your pa is not a stupid man.”

“No, he isn’t.”

“How come you’ve never told your father about you being gay—or, rather, bisexual?”

Drew sighed and shrugged. “It’s never come up.”

“It’s never come up? Somehow, I find that hard to believe. What’s stopped you? You always told me that your pa was a wise and good man. It’s clear how much you admire and trust him, yet you haven’t shared such an important thing.”

Drew sighed again. “I don’t know. In my mind, there wasn’t a chance to talk about it. You know that when I moved to the city for college, I was still coming to terms with the fact that men attracted me as well as women.”

Joon nodded but said nothing and let his friend continue.

“After I came back, I didn’t find a moment—or that’s just what I told myself. Somewhere in my mind, I always thought I’d marry a woman. So, why complicate things?”

“And why is that?” It was the first time Drew had told him that.

“As I grew up, I always heard Pa talking with Mom and then Aunt Lily about wanting grandchildren. I live in a small town. The probability of me finding a gay man here is less than zero.”

“So, you have given no thought to a relationship with a man?”

“It has passed my mind, but since I like women as well, the idea of marrying and having children isn’t so bad.”

It made sense. In their years at university, Drew had been with both men and women.

“From what I’m seeing, you’ll have it hard making that dream true. This town lacks not only gay men, but young, unmarried women as well. You’re going to comfort yourself with a nice widow who still has her natural teeth.”

“You might be right.” Drew chuckled.

“But you go to the city from time to time,” Joon said after a moment of silence.

“Yes, but like you said, from time to time and just for one or two days. And I doubt I’ll find the right man to have a relationship with in a bathroom at a gay club, on his knees, sucking my dick.”

Joon grimaced. “Not a very good start for a relationship.”

He tried not to think about that day when he had fallen on his knees in front of Robby. At least it’d happened after a few days and not minutes, and they had been in an office, not a bathroom at a club.
